Your PHF Journey
Everyone Starts Somewhere. Here’s Where That Usually Is.
Most people who find Paula Henry Fitness aren’t sure where to begin. They haven’t hired a trainer before, haven’t been inside a gym, or have been moving through life with nagging pain, low energy, and a sense that their body isn’t working the way it should. Some have tried things that didn’t work. Some have been putting it off for years.
Wherever you’re starting from, the path at PHF almost always begins the same way — with a free conversation and a clear, honest look at what your body actually needs.

Phase 1 — The Free Strategy Session
Before any training begins, Paula sits down with you one-on-one. This first session is always complimentary — no charge, no obligation. It’s a conversation.
Paula will ask about your history, your goals, and what’s been getting in the way. She’ll assess how your body moves — your flexibility, your range of motion, your foundational strength. And she’ll be honest with you about what she finds.
This is your opportunity to get to know Paula, ask every question you have, and decide whether PHF is the right fit. The beginning is always gentle. Paula works specifically with people who are starting over, starting for the first time, or rebuilding after injury — and she knows exactly how to meet you where you are.
You have not been failing. You have been guessing. The Strategy Session is where the guessing stops.
Phase 2 — 1:1 Private Training
Almost every PHF client begins with private 1:1 sessions. This is intentional.
1:1 time gives you something group classes can’t in the beginning — complete privacy, undivided attention, and the space to work on your specific weaknesses without any outside pressure. You learn how the studio works, how Paula coaches, and how your own body responds to training. You build the physical foundation and the confidence that group work requires.
What 1:1 Training Builds
-
An honest understanding of where your strength actually is
-
Correct movement patterns before adding load or intensity
-
Familiarity with Paula’s training style and the PHF environment
-
The physical baseline needed to keep up and contribute in a group setting
-
Trust — in Paula, in the process, and in your own body
How long this phase lasts varies entirely from person to person. Some clients are ready to transition after a few weeks. Others take longer — not because they’re failing, but because their body needs more time to rebuild. There is no pressure and no fixed timeline. Paula will tell you when she sees you’re ready, and the two of you will make that call together.
Phase 3 — The Transition to Group
When the time is right — and Paula and the client both feel it — the conversation about group classes begins. It’s always mutual. Paula will never push a client into a group before they’re physically or mentally ready. And most clients, once they’ve built their foundation, find themselves genuinely looking forward to it.
What Changes in Group
Group classes at PHF are not generic fitness classes. Every person in the room is working their own individual program — their own exercises, their own weights, their own progressions. What changes is the energy around them.
-
The social atmosphere pushes people to work harder than they would alone
-
Friendly competition — even unspoken — raises everyone’s effort
-
Seeing others at different stages of the same journey is genuinely motivating
-
Conversations happen naturally between people who understand what each other is going through
Clients consistently report that they work to a higher level in group than they do in 1:1. The environment does something that individual training, no matter how good, cannot replicate.
Your body is the most self-healing machine ever created. Sometimes it just needs the right room to do it in.

When the Timeline Is Longer
Some clients take more time before transitioning to group — and that’s completely normal. The barrier is different for everyone. For some it’s physical — they’re still resolving a strength issue or managing a chronic condition that requires more direct hands-on work. For others it’s confidence — they’re not quite ready to share a space with others while they’re still finding their footing.
Both are valid. Paula doesn’t measure progress against anyone else’s timeline. She measures it against where you started.
Blending 1:1 and Group
Many PHF clients don’t fully leave 1:1 behind once they join group classes. Some alternate — a group session most weeks and a 1:1 session when they want to work on something specific, recover from a setback, or simply prefer private time with Paula for a stretch.
There is no single right way to train at PHF. Paula works with each client to find the combination that fits their body, their schedule, and their goals — and that combination can change over time.
The PHF Community
One of the things that surprises new clients most is the community they find here. PHF is not a busy gym floor. It’s a small, focused studio where people know each other’s names, know each other’s stories, and genuinely root for each other.
Most of Paula’s clients started in exactly the same place — uncertain, out of practice, not sure what their body was capable of anymore. That shared experience creates something real. And the research backs up what Paula has seen for over 20 years: the body builds faster when you enjoy the process.
Which Path Is Right for You?
If you’re not sure whether to start with 1:1 or jump straight into group classes, Paula will help you figure that out in your free Strategy Session. Most people start with 1:1. But the right answer depends on your body, your history, and your goals — and Paula will be straight with you about what she recommends.
